The 5 Hobbies We Need To Age Well

Did you have a hobby when you were young?

I collected coins and rocks. Both made my memory box very heavy.

What about now? Do you still have hobbies?

Longevity experts suggest we need at least 5 hobbies in our life to help us to age well. To no one’s surprise scrolling and binge watching our favorite sitcom is not on the list.

By definition a hobby is:
an activity done regularly in our spare time for pleasure.

Two words jump out at me as important for this conversation- regular and pleasure.

So you may be thinking- How can coins and rocks help me to age well.

Fair question. They can’t, but the right hobbies can, so let’s explore.

Here are 5 hobby “categories” that we need to consider as we grow older.

  1. A hobby that keeps us healthy.
Something that helps our body feel strong and energized.
Movement helps our body and our brain. Pickleball is hot. But an evening walk after dinner can be just as pleasurable. The key is to find something enjoyable enough to do on a regular basis.

  2. A hobby that helps us grow.
Something that helps us engage our mind, makes us think, and keeps our curiosity alive. The goal is to keep learning which provides the opportunity to grow.

  3. A hobby that brings us peace.
We need something to help manage stress, and allow our minds to slow down. We have many options to choose from. But be ready with the one that works for you. Stress will raise it’s ugly head on occasion.

  4. A hobby that connects us to others.
Relationships are critical as we grow older. And yes, we may actually need to talk with someone, or listen. Both is best. Relationships do lead to a longer life, and just may be the best way to make life worth living.

  5. A hobby that gives us purpose.
In the Blue Zones they call this Ikagai, a reason to rise in the morning.
Our purpose does not need to be grandiose. Purpose isn’t about how important something looks to others. It’s about how meaningful it is to you.

Hobbies are more important than we think.

Hobbies are not just a way to fill our spare time.

They can help build a longer, happier, and healthier life worth living.

Hobbies can help us to age well.

Enjoy your day,

Garry

Just a little extra-

I don’t collect rocks anymore, and I can’t seem to find my coin collection.

But I do have hobbies:

  • I walk and exercise regularly. My dog loves this hobby.

  • I read and research the topic of aging. How fun do I sound?

  • I write and speak on topics related to aging. But you already knew that.

  • I make it a point to stay connected with friends. Does anyone make phone calls anymore?

  • I love my family. Maybe that’s not technically a hobby, but it is far too important to leave off the list.
