We Are What We Eat

I like this phrase. It cuts to the heart of the importance of food for our health and longevity. I used to be a chocolate milkshake. “Used to be” as the important part of that sentence. More about that later.

The phrase “We are what we eat” traces it’s roots back to 1826 where a French lawyer, Anthelm Brillat-Savarin included the phrase in his writing called The Pysiology of Taste. His actual phrase was-
”Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you who you are”

Are you healthy or not? Tell me what you eat.

I am not going to tell you what to eat today. Although I will tell you the world’s longest living people in the Blue Zones do eat a version of the Mediterranean Diet filled with fruit , vegetables, some meat, beans and sweet potatoes, the purple kind. Just sayin.

May I suggest what we should not eat, according to the experts. Yes, we know this, but at times we all need a reminder to stay away from the chocolate shake.

OK, what should we not eat- limit our sugar, processed food, or anything that comes in a box. That is it, no long sermon from me today. Pretty simple start to moving toward our new identity. We don’t come in a box, or from a fast food restaurant. There are many books, articles, and podcasts that can fill in the details. But if we eat food in it’s natural form we can’t go wrong.

So… the chocolate shake. I discovered this delicacy with my best friend when I was 18. I consumed 16,732(or there abouts) of my homemade, world famous, secret recipe shakes before I stopped cold turkey when I turned 60. I loved this nightly tradition, but when the wisdom finally kicked in, I gave it up for a cup of hot green tea. It is not the same. But I needed to stop being a chocolate shake.

We are what we eat- Be the broccoli, not the bacon. Just a little “food for thought”

Enjoy your day,

Garry

Just a little extra-

It is 10:00 AM, time for my morning meal. My eating window is 10AM-6PM, yes, a 8-16 intermittent fasting plan. We need to talk more about fasting in the future. Oh, it will be fun.

My meal/ recipe:
Plain 2% Greek yogurt mixed with honey
Mix ins- flaxseed meal, chai seeds and Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat Powder
Fruit- blueberries, strawberries, and banana
Nuts- Pistachios, or walnuts or pumpkin seeds

I really do enjoy this almost every day. But the important part- It sets a healthy tone for the rest of the day, reboots my identity if you will. I am what I eat. This day I will be healthy.
